A feasibility assessment of a retrofit Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell coal-fired plant for flue gas CO2 segregation

This work considers the use of a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) system as power generation and CO2 concentrator unit downstream coal burner an existing production plant. In this way, capability MCFCs for segregation, which today is studied primarily in reference to large-scale plants, applied intermediate-size plant highlighting potential MCFC low energy method carbon capture. A technical feasibility analysis was performed using system-integrated model capable determining steady-state performance across varying feed composition. The user implemented Aspen Custom Modeler integrated into Plus. electrochemical, thermal, mass balance effects simulate cell electrical segregation performance. Results obtained suggest specific requirement 1.41 MJ kg CO2?1 significantly lower than seen conventional Monoethanolamine (MEA) capture processes.
